Think Before You Stab Your Best Friend
”You put this on a mix for me.”
She said this like she was recalling a pleasant shared memory but it wasn’t because I never put this song onto a mix for her.
I like The Cars but I don’t own any of their stuff because I don’t need to. Their music was imprinted on by brain thanks to MTV and 80’s AOR radio. This isn’t a bad thing but I knew there was no way I’d put “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend” on a mix for my wife.
So, the obvious question that came to mind was: “Who the fuck is making my wife mixes?”
The signs clearly pointed to my best friend.
I’m not one to fly off the handle so instead of running off to stab my best friend I simply said that she was mistaken and started thinking of a reasonable explanation. An uncomfortable minute later it hit me: She was thinking of another song…Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World.”
It’s an understandable mistake listen for yourself:
SIDEBAR: I’d like to state in my defense that I only heard the opening bars before I made my comment. I am fully aware a) What “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend” sounds like past the opening bars and b) said song has never appeared on a mix tape made for me.
